How to choose machinery for mining

6 min readUpdated 2026-06-15

In a mining operation, every hour of stopped machinery is lost production you can't recover. That's why the equipment decision isn't won on list price, but on cost per ton moved over the useful life — and that number is defined by uptime.

1. Uptime before price

A cheaper machine that's down 15% of the time is more expensive than a robust one running 95%. Before comparing datasheets, assess the equipment's proven reliability and the supplier's real ability to keep it running. The robustness of leading brands is validated by the transnational mining firms that choose them to run 24/7.

2. Size by tonnage and cycle

Equipment is sized by the material, target tonnage and haul distance. The loading excavator and the haul truck must be balanced: an excavator that fills the truck in 3–4 passes optimizes the cycle. Oversizing the truck without the right excavator only adds cost, not output.

3. On-site support 24/7

Mines are usually far from cities, so support has to reach the operation. Make sure the supplier has mechanics and engineers able to serve on-site, not just in the shop. A maintenance contract with on-site presence shifts the uptime risk to whoever manages it best.

4. Critical parts and telematics

Local stock of critical parts is what separates a downtime of hours from one of days. Add telematics (like KOMTRAX): monitoring hours, fuel and fleet health in real time enables predictive maintenance — replacing the component before it fails, in the planned window, not mid-production.

Frequently asked questions

What machinery is used in mining?

Large excavators and loaders for loading, rigid and articulated trucks for hauling, and crawler dozers for pushing and preparation. Size depends on tonnage and haul distance.

Why does 24/7 support matter?

Because mining runs continuously and every stopped hour is lost production. On-site support and parts in stock minimize downtime, which is the real cost.
